Globally, the lion population has dropped by 43% over the past 21 years. 100 years ago, the lion population was approximately 200,000. Only an estimated 24,000 wild lions remain. Humans are the key cause of this devastating decline and with the current rate of poaching and habitat loss, lions could be completely extinct by 2050.
